Qualified Tutors

Every tutor holds or is earning a university degree, and each one is selected for how they problem solve, not just what they know.

Some students fall through the gap between how school teaches and how they learn — and start to think they're just not smart. I built Deliberate U Tutoring to be the bridge.

About Us

DeliberateU Founder, Fiona

Deliberate U was founded by Fiona, an Ontario-certified teacher with three decades of classroom experience. We believe the best tutors watch how a student thinks before anything else. Tailoring their approach to how a student learns builds confidence Confidence grows from small wins. Every session, every tutor match, and every conversation with parents is intentional because tutoring isn’t just a transaction. It’s a partnership that helps your student learn how to learn.

Will my student actually focus online?

Fair question — and the one we hear most. Here's why online sessions work.

High quality tutors

Because sessions are online, we can hire tutors with top marks who stay into their full-time careers — and they stay for years. We have tutors that have been with the same student from kindergarten all the way through high school. Research shows that a steady tutor relationship is one of the biggest factors in long term success.

Research backs it up

Research from Evidence for Learning(Australia) and multiple international trials (rapid evidence reviews) confirms that the biggest levers of effective online learning are regular sessions, clear goals, and timely and specific feedback. With these factors, online tutoring produces gains comparable to face-to-face for most students.

They're home. You're nearby.

Your student works where they're comfortable, and you can be in the next room. Being in their own environment, with the same tutor every week, increases their ability to settle in and focus. Bonus - access your tutor from anywhere.

Resources readily available

Online means the tutor can quickly change learning styles and mediums, keeping the material relevant and the student engaged. Students have easy access to their homework, and tutors can quickly access our full library of resources.

One - On - One

Stanford researchers analyzed transcripts from over 16,000 tutoring sessions and found one-on-one was close to twice as effective as two-on-one — the tutor's attention simply gets divided. Every session here is one student and one tutor.

My grade 11 son was struggling with Functions . . . . After working with {Tutor} for 2 sessions, my son came home with a 96% on his last functions test. The tutoring is all online and she worked through each step slowly and methodically. I am so pleased with his results and I can't praise Fiona and {Tutor} enough for helping my son achieve success in this class and restore his confidence.
I would highly recommend any parent to book a session and see the results for themselves.
Reasonable rates and worth every penny!

Our son is struggling with Math. Grade 5 was the time we realized he was falling behind, so we looked into finding support for him. . . . soon found out that he was actually at a grade 3 level. After a whole summer of tutoring, he is almost caught up to grade 6. The tutoring is done from home and is highly interactive, which keeps him engaged throughout the entire hour of tutoring.

How it works

Invest 20 minutes to get insight and answers.

01

A 20-minute call with Fiona.

She'll ask more about what brought you here, assess where your student is stuck and she'll use her expertise to suggest a plan and next steps.

02

We match your student with a tutor.

The match is based on subject expertise, learning style, and personality.

03

Ensure excellence.

We check in after the first session to get feedback, and adjust if needed to make sure we rocked it.

04

Follow up and follow Through.

Weekly sessions with the same tutor. Your tutor sends session reports and next steps after each session, and Fiona adds direction and expertise.

Recruiting Process

Fiona hires every tutor herself, through a multi-step process. She watches them teach before they ever meet a student, and asks each one the same interview question: "Tell me about a time you got stuck, and how you worked through it." Someone who's worked through being stuck themselves knows how to guide a student who's stuck now.

Tutors That Love Learning

We hire tutors who make the complex simple, who can bring real understanding, and not just tips and tricks. We're looking for people who love learning themselves, because students can feel the difference. It's what makes them lean in to learn more instead of glazing over.

Reviews

Choosing DeliberateU Tutoring was the best decision I have made to help further my son’s education experience. Fiona, the owner, made the process of signing up seamless and she is quick to respond to any questions I had.

Our tutor is fantastic! She brought out a joy of learning in my son I have never seen. She is calm and joyful and has a love of teaching that radiates through her lessons.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

At DeliberateU Tutoring, I felt that my tutor truly cared. After each session, they reviewed what we had learned to make sure I fully understood every topic. If I struggled with something, my tutor took the time to follow up by email, carefully going over each step. They also made sure I knew I could reach out anytime with questions and that they would respond as soon as they could. This made me feel that they genuinely wanted to help, not just during our sessions, but whenever I needed support. I would definitely use DeliberateU Tutoring again and recommend them to others!

FAQs

  • How much does it cost?

It depends on what your student needs — that's part of what the call with Fiona sorts out. She'll give you the exact number before you commit to anything.

  • What grades do you cover?

From Kindergarten all the way through university

  • How often are sessions, and how long?

Sessions are typically 60 min, and the frequency is up to you! We ask for a committment of once a week if you'd like to hold the same tutor for the month.

  • Do you work with neurodivergent students?

Yes. Many of our students learn differently, and online sessions in their own environment, with a consistent tutor, work especially well for them.

  • What happens on the strategy call?

Fiona will ask about your student — where they're stuck, how they learn, what motivates them, and assess what type of support would help.

  • What happens if the tutor is not a good fit?

We thrive on feedback - let us know at any time and we'll make adjustments.

  • Is the tutoring in person?

The tutoring is one-on-one online. We do not offer in person tutoring. Results demonstrate that online tutoring provides tutor consistency, great access to resources, and flexibility. Read More

  • What kind of commitment is required?

To get a consistent tutor, we ask for a month's committment.
